Ria & Ronak - Lohri, New England, 2006
Lohri, also known as the 'bonfire festival,' is a northern Indian celebration of fertility and the rabi (winter) harvest, observed annually on January 13. Festival fare includes makki-di-roti (cornflour flatbread), sarson-da-saag (mustard spinach), peanuts, revdi (brown sugar hard confectionary coated with sesame seeds), gajak (brown sugar soft confectionary with embedded nuts), gudh (jaggery), and popcorn (especially useful for tossing into the bonfire).
