About Gurbachan Singh Lamba

Gurbachan Singh Lamba was the second of four siblings: an elder brother, Sujan, a younger brother, Shobha, and a younger adopted sister. Gurbachan and Sujan operated a Khalsa school (up to grade 10) in Peshawar, India (now in Pakistan) until the partition of India in 1947. Gurbachan and Sujan were headmaster and principal respectively.

Sujan and his wife raised three sons, Himmat, Tripat, and Jasbir.

Gurbachan's son, Surendra, recalls that the family maintained a separate set of dishes for entertaining Muslim visitors.

Gurbachan's wife, Har Kaur, came to be known as bhabhiji (respected sister-in-law), since that was how Gurbachan's brother addressed her. She was famous for her made-from-scratch sukki sevian (dry sweet noodles) and pinnis (sweet wheat balls with nuts). Since she spoke only Punjabi, her conversations with Hindi-speaking domestic help had legendary comedic moments. On more than one occasion, she would mutter something in Punjabi to which Bhagwan Devi (domestic help) would respond "hain jee" (pardon me) and bhabhiji would answer "mein tere naal nahin an" (I'm not addressing you). And on and on they would go, repeating the same phrases, neither one able to comprehend the other.

Upon British India's partition (into India and Pakistan), Gurbachan and family settled at 14 Chakrata Road in Dehradun (India). Gurbachan was heartbroken as a result of the loss of his livelihood and possessions in Peshawar. He never recovered from the jolt and succumbed to leukodystrophy soon afterward.

Gurbachan and Har Kaur raised five children (in chronological order):
